Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
